Nickel vs Black Barrel Changeover
In January 2025, SoundTools replaced the standard barrel used on all SuperCAT cables (5e, 6a, and 7) to maintain conductivity.
The conductive barrel allows for the pin 1 signal to pass when using analog audio. While the cable will still work with the new style barrel, the possibility of losing ground continuity due to the new finish prompted us to change to the Nickel version.
The new style and old style (see image below) are very different electronically and are visually easy to identify.

The new KTL finish is black on the inside, while the old chromium 6 version has some metal exposed.
We are replacing any new KTL barrels based on your request. However, there is no need to change out the older finish, as it will remain conductive.
